The National Institute of Health did a study showing that emotions are clearly aligned with the development and progression of many diseases; after all, the word is DIS EASE. Their study cited:
“There is data to support the hypothesis that individuals characterized by a more negative affective style poorly recruit their immune response and may be at risk for illness more so than those with a positive affective style.”
So, let’s get happier! Your days are long, your commitment is deep, and your pressures are high, this makes it even more critical for you to take time. In my recent book, Self-Care is Essential, a personal resiliency program for healthcare professionals, first responders and caregivers.
I offer many user-friendly, enjoyable strategies for a happier, healthier life. One tip is to stay active. I know you are saying,” I am on my feet all day, I am so tired, and by the time I get home, I do not feel like getting active!” Sound familiar? Let me ask you, would you say that to your dearest patient in the hospital? Likely you would not, you would dig deep and get them the help they needed, simply because you know your help will make them feel better. Treat yourself like you are your favorite most needy patient. Finding time to move doesn’t mean to slump off to a class you hate, pay high gym fees, or sticking with the same thing every day. We now live with the ability to go on you tube type in simple no equipment 10-minute workout. And BOOM…there you go! I can promise you that getting yourself there to a class or in front of the TV may be the hardest thing to do, but after, you will be so happy. You will have burned calories, increased endorphins, and hit a goal. Before you know it, you will find yourself getting into a rhythm and even doing workouts longer and longer because the immune boosting, happy pill of a workout is now a regular part of your day! BRAVO!!! Some days you will do 5-minutes of jumping jacks, some days you may find yourself doing 30, 40, 60-minute yoga classes, bootcamps, or strength training. Be sure to try many things with many teachers, mix it up all the time to keep it fresh, exciting, new and fun. Find a buddy that keeps you on track and helps you to follow through with these goals, motivate each other, challenge each other. Another rich part of self-care is finding your community to boost you and be there for you. The time is now. No excuses, you would never give your favorite patient excuses of why they cannot be healthier and happier, now it is your time.
